Europe 72 version = second to none.
By: samansun. on 24 Aug 08, 02:12:23
A songwriting marvel, yet too big a challenge to overcome! Even for the Dead (here) obviously. The version on Europe '72 album was from Olympia Theater, Paris, which invariably is and will be the best as the drums kept up with Phil's intoxicating bass lines to make the rest follow nicely. The 2004 tour version (at the Gorge/ Wa)had great bass/drums/keys/guitars(thanks Jimi Herring)but the vocals were way off. This is combat field for a rhythm section to learn real stuff.

I'm with pbl1 - it's the camera work that really takes this version to the next level.

I was at this show! I was a Freshman at Cornell and this was right at the end of final exam week. the show was at Barton Hall on the Cornell campus. It was a magical evening. Thanks for putting this up. And yes, it is Ithaca. Enjoy.

Yeah, Donna will be Donna. There are times I really like her and other times I wish she'd just shut up. I guess I like her for two reasons, I'm partial toward women singers and she does sound nice on Shakedown (album).

Always has been an excellent recording and may be my favorite Jack Straw - Jerrys' guitar licks after "now the the die must fall" is neat - as the whole thing is...

it's strange, since GD are so not known for their studio efforts but i really thought Donna sounded great on 'from the heart of me,' 'passenger,' and 'france'... she just could never sing in key live.. i know she's a decent singer, or decent enough, i forget who but some 60s acts were using her as backup vocalist so her credibility is not unfounded. it always turned me off to hear her caterwauling through Playin'... what a mess.

never heard donna fit in harmonically as well...they really took their time here...in a good way

II. but i suppose it's the same thing when new jacks try to sell me on '91-93. i dunno, people are too quick to resign this show as being the best-ever, the band's pinnacle, what have you.. please treat yourself to 7/13/84, 10/29/85 and set2 of 10/10/82 and if these shows aren't in the same breath as this one then i'll eat my hat. and it is Ithaca, NY, get the spelling straight, genius.
By: DiamondJoeQuimby. on 13 Nov 07, 03:38:01
I. i guess it's because i grew up on 80s Brent-era GD but i always this was the most overrated show in history; sure, it's a fine representation of that era of the Dead but the tempo is kinda sluggish and, well, there's Donna..
By: BubbaG52. on 10 Nov 07, 00:34:23
this show isnt real... come on people, its a compilation of many shows.
