the fact is we wont be getting another OS with such a wiude range of software/hardware support for quite a while if ever and bitching about it wont make it any better. I for one, while having encountered problems with windows know that i isn; always the fault of the OS. Sometimes it can be user stupidity or hardware. Hell I'm still using hardware from the agp single core 32bit cpu era and i only one problem, my comp wont play games :\ Such is life though, things eventually break.

people that say that either have a computer hardware that *sucks* or dont know what their talking about. im use fed 9, deb & ubuntu 64 but MAINLY vista for everyday things like games, videos, pron. if setup right vista can run for years uptime!! only downside requires reboots after security updates n 64bit has issues with paging it racks up quite quickly with virtualization with vmware n such. never used mac due to lack of hardware support but if i could be proven wrong then im glad to try os 10

You then come to realise that so many decisions went wrong in the process of making it, that a complete multi-bilion economy has been built in order to make up for all the problems users encunter with Windows. With windows mobile devices, pages get rendered like shit because it's not a real browser. And because the screen is so small, you see a tiny portion of the page. To zoom requires the menu and choosing from a few settings. Furthermore, there are no multiple tabs and quicktime doesn't play. But yeah...that's a user problem! Here's the simplest of tests. Borrow an iPhone and use a blackjack. Next navigate to craigslist with each phone. Then click on the "cars & trucks" link in the "for sale" section. I apologize about the "brainwashing" comment, but I am just that way with pretty much ALL of today's modern digital sales. This is how Linux helped me: I use Puppy Linux on over 90% of my Windows repairs. Also, when I was in college and my XP installation had HUGE problems with a small legitimate driver (constant blue screens), Ubuntu saved my ass. I used OpenOffice for my docs and was able to get all my online work done. Without it, I would have been toast.

Look, we're not trying to say you suck because you use Windows. I use Windows myself right along with Linux. But they both have their strengths and weaknesses. And since the Linux mantra is all about freedom, the Linux community is by default fine with Windows (or at least they should be). With that being said, you cannot honestly put down ALL Linux for ONE problem. That would be comparable to scrapping Windows because it wouldn't support your sound card.

I messed up with the "not end user ready make" but I guess it's still readable. Anyway, I'll tell you the kind of thing that grosses me out with Linux (and so open myself to like criticism): at some point I was a BOINC enthusiast, and I wanted to run it on all of my processors. I had it running on Windows XP and on Mac OS X by basically double clicking an icon. For Ubuntu I had a *page long recipe* and in the end, it didn't work :-). So, not ready for me.

But not being able to make an unspecified wireless card work with a system not end user ready make. Both my Atheros AR5008X Wireless Network Adapter and my DLINK-DI-524 adapter play seamlessly with Ubuntu, while my Encore ENPWI-G Wireless PCMCIA Adapter from Hell took me days to figure out how to work on _Windows XP_.

And mostly, the people who are willing to tweak their equipment (kinda like how car buffs like to customize their vehicles) are usually the kind who have or try Linux, so there is almost no need for Linux repairs. Maybe, but Linux doesn't exactly have a huge home user base yet; its much more popular as a server manager as its fairly weak on graphics. Adding to the difficulty of programing viruses for Linux are all the different flavors, like redhat or mandrake. But mobile devices, which would have to be somewhat standardized, are much different from a terminal; ergo a Mobile (regardless of OS) is more vulnerable, especially since mobile devices physically change hands more often. *shrug* We'll see.

Poor naysayers...it doesn't look like Android is going to fail. Its the Iphone for any hardware vendor and carrier that wants it while Iphone is exclusive to AT&T and no other hadware vendors. Its also an open way for developers to make applications that have access right down to the core of the phone. Look for it to blow the Iphone and Windoze mobile completely out of the water. The carriers and phone makers simply have too much to gain from it. One can't let the other get and not answer back.

Nice try but there are only 100 or so viruses out there for Linux and each one requires that you be sitting at a terminal with root access to install it. If you had virus trouble then its someone internal putting them on the machines. Too many people have root access. If you meant problems with folk breaking in then the admins don't know what they are doing or how to harden a base install.

I can't speak for others, but my former company had a good deal of Virus trouble with Linux. Granted, this was a network, not a phone. As for OSX, its less flexible, more secure, but the OSX/Oompa A virus specifically targeted iChat. Now I don't know how the things are programed, but I would think that a chat protocol on a desktop mac cannot be so different from a phone instant messenger. But like I said, I dont know. I dumped my iphone for unrelated reasons, it got too goddamned hot!

Yeah but don't forget the obvious advantage that Open Source has-millions of developers all over the world. That means that security is rock-hard. This is also one of the reasons why Mac OS X has virtually no viruses. Yeah sure, less people counts for something, but if they had the same market shares, Linux would have the lest viruses, followed by OS X, and lastly, Windows.
