Anybody know anything about Raymond Leppard, the conductor? i really like his style,if everybody gets what i mean.he's a good conductor from what i can see,and i just like his jollyness =D as for Wynton, he's amazing like usual. his interpretation of this piece is remarkable, and truly worthy of reference to many trumpet tactics, especially his articulation i find. =D go Wynton! come back to classical! or at least play classical more than he does now.how much classical does he play now a days?

Totally agree with gotmooo here. Andy guy is clearly a crap player or not even a muscian at all. This recording along with the Phillip Smith one are the best around. Many Trumpet and brass teachers use this recording in teaching. I mean, how can he say unfocused tone? This guy's high Eb is supurb. Ultra clear with no hesitation. Trumpet players aspire to sound like him so it's insulting to hear from an uneducated oaf that "oh it's not focused, not that i know what the fu ck i'm talking about".

not the problem, even if we can point the finger at them. Historical wind instruments have very few technical limitations and I can assure you tuning is not one of them. and just like string players we can play any note with just intonation according to the key we're in. Natural brass instruments, with their built-in tunings, can bend notes too, to a far lesser extent, but they still sound a lot more in tune and better than modern brass.

Unless, of course, you use a cembalo universalis which has strings and keys for EVERY note with it's octaves divided into 24 parts;) Wind players aren't lazy or, oddly enough, incompetent. We like playing in meantone temperments because it's not only easier it sounds better. Unfortunately if we (period musicians) want to get paid we need to cater to the modern ears of our audiences and end up using valotti-like tunings which are closer to the equal side of things. to be more complicated with winds, I don't know too much of the technicalities being a string player, but I'm assured that it is possible to use just intonation but that most players are too lazy or incompetent to do so. The result seems to be a sort of quasi-equal temperament (even with a lot of professional orchestras, mainly the largers ones) and when there is deviation from this it always seems to be that awful "leading notes should lead" philosophy which just destroys harmony.

I think this is why ensemble music is so much more expressive than keyboard music, as that freedom of intonation is retained, I like to think it was one of the reasons Weber abandoned keyboard continuo with his orchestra too, as he seemed to have a very sensitive ear for harmonic as well as timbral colouration. he was a clever man, but sadly, yes modern musicians who dont' know their way around temperments, pitch, and tuning don't know their way around their own instruments...which is why most people don't hire them and which is why i don't play with them LoLz! They were defintiely more aware of harmony and tuning pre-equal tempered composition. That was the whole point; every key, interval, harmonic progression/figure meant something and have it's own unique color.

Not true, in fact historical bassoons, and hautboys, are among the easiest instruments to play in tune. In fact all historical wind instruments are more in tune than modern instruments. Take it from a pro, I like being able to choose between A# and Bb. There's no excuse for bad players, though:P

You're right, but in this particular youtube recording, practically all I can hear on "Licht" is the timps. Anyway, it is just a rehearsal, so the mikes I'm sure aren't set up properly etc., so never mind. (My third favourite bit of word-painting is "war tod" in Der Erlkoenig - spooky. Oh yes, and "Barrabam!" in the St Matthew Passion. It's just a Dim7th, but it sounds harmonically weird.)

Well, the choir should dominate at least enough for the audience to be able to hear the words clearly. And no, I didn't know about the chorist-fagotte. But choristers who lack perfect pitch do routinely pick up their notes from the orchestra anyway. As to the "neat trick", the story has it that at the premiere, Haydn pointed upwards and said "it came from there". But Bach did much the same thing on "Et resurrexit" in the B- mass.

Out of chaos comes order so all that modulating and then the homey feel of Cmj is a neat trick. 115 voices, Mahler would've been proud and then he would've said "bring me more singers!" Sadly, I have to disagree with you on who dominates. everything should be balanced, especially if you're using the older hardware. it's just how it's written. The band pretty much doubles everything all the time. Did you know that all church choirs had a "chorist-fagotte" to secretly keep the singers in tune?;)

No, no... soloist sets the tempo. The conductor set the tempo for the Mozart you referenced, but not for solo works. Celloshoe isn't saying there's only one right tempo to play this at, but that it was the wrong tempo for him at this performance/time, and as another musician who also admires Rostropovich, I'm inclined to agree.

Way too fast! Come on, you guys... listen! He can't even keep up with himself and it sucks the musicality out of the piece. I can't believe this is Rostropovich I'm hearing. Mistakes all over and poor tuning? It's not just the big intonation errors, but little ones all over between the sixteenths... they're just all off. I really don't understand why everyone is voting down negative comments about this video. Is it just because of who he is, because his name doesn't make it a good recording.

since it's classical music, not restricted by copyrights, anyone can record their own interpretation of the piece, and sell it. It's common to find, for any piece of classical music, a wide amount of different versions played by different interpreters, so it's nothing weird that jsisgbise has a CD where Horowitz playing it, while this one is interpreted by miss Leach ;)

nach dem Krieg wurde lediglich entschieden, dass bei offiziellen Anlässen nur die dritte Strophe gesungen werden soll. Nach der Wiedervereinigung wurde diese Strophe dann entgültig zur Nationalhymne erklärt. Ein Verbot gab es nie. Warum sollte man auch ein Drittel eines Liedes verbieten? Die deutsche Geschichte hat ja auch nicht erst 1933 begonnen. Dauert aber wohl noch Jahrzehnte, bis das auch der letzte Pseudo-Linke verstanden hat

Callas was NOT a great voice, but she was a passionate singer and an excellent dramatist. Her voice was good - not great. Her top notes were often shrill and her bottom register was lacking fullness. Bartoli has a beautiful, full voice and is always in control of it. She is also a very good actress. Unfortunately, she does not cut the figure that Callas did on stage- after Callas she lost 100 lbs. But she sacrificed her voice for looks.

He's a great musician..yes..but he seems almost robotic... Years of dedication have made him pitch perfect. I admire that but also dislike it about him. He's not so entertaining to watch unless his fingers are flying 90 to nothing. Not saying he's bad which would be VERY VERY false I just think his style is very dry. He does seem like he plays the clarinet too... I'd love to see him in concert though. It doesn't seem like he's playing very loudly on video.

Sergei is THE definition of prodigy. You can tell, though, that he is still young, there is an "error" in his technique. The way he lays his fingers across the valves rather than placing the fingertips on the valve caps. I also love how everyone is in street clothes, the focus is on the music, not looking nice.

i have never played this piece on anything other than Bb, but it really isn't that high... i think being able to play it in a different key would only be helpful if you were playing this concerto in addition to other pieces... thus, it would be easier on the lips... but seriously, if you can't play a couple of c's and one eb (which you can easily hit by putting enough air through the horn), then you should immediately switch to a FAKE INSTRUMENT (i.e. saxophone, recorder, etc.)...

Marsalis is great-he can pretty much play anything of any style. Wynton marsalis doesn't play symphonic literature much because i guess it's not his thing. Tons of virtuosity. But to say that you can play symphonic literature "better" than Wynton is pretty much making yourself look like a fool. You should post some videos of your playing because talk is cheap... and i can care less what my grammar is...as long as i get the point across.

I think marsalis and andre both play great...but lets not degrade players as you are right here. Wynton is known to be one of the greatest trumpet players of all time. And as maurice andre says himself "I consider Wynton Marsalis to be one of the greatest classical players of this generation" So just watch what you say...especially when you're probably only an amatuer considering any advanced highschool or college student would never make such an ignorant comment.

Marsalis is very good at playing and leading jazz. Marsalis is just not a very accomplished baroque/symphonic trumpet player. Anyone who is familiar with the genre knows this. There are lots and lots of people who are better than him at this. I am a better baroque/symphonic trumpet player than Marsalis. Also, Andre plays jazz much better than Marsalis plays baroque.

This is so joyful. The camera work was done by someone who is neither a musician nor a thinker. A closeup of a bow moving back and forth is useless. But I digress. This is marvelous. Everyone should have Rostropovich, who's the first, Bylsma, who is the best, and Wispelway, who is the happiest. I listen to this all the time, and have never grown tired of it, but the camera work is really annoying.

Period performance is all about going back to the source of the music. It's all about playing the music as it would have been played back in the day. It's getting back to the instruments and playing techniques that the composers themselves were familiar with. It's also about resurrecting the music of composers who have been lost to the ages, and resurrecting the instruments that fell out of use, like the harpsichord and viola da gamba.

There seems to be a view that modern performance is better than period performance, when as you said, it's really like comparing apples and oranges. I don't think there is anything wrong with playing 18th century music on modern instruments, but I think that we can and have learned alot from historically informed performance. Being really into history, historically informed performance is the closest thing we can come to time travel.

The further point on that is also related to the environment in which performances are given. Smaller venues and chamber groups I agree benefit from "period" instrumentation and technique. But I do think the matter is kind of comparing apples to oranges: it's conjecture what Haydn might've thought about a Wagnerian brass section, but I still wonder greatly what Beethoven might've done with a Steinway Model D.

Oh I agree; however the technical advancements (Boehm mechanism, valving, metal wound strings, etc) in instruments have been adopted and accepted by both composers and players for the simple reason that SOUND is the whole point of making music! While I certainly grant that a kind of shift, sacrifice even, is made in tonal characteristics (I deliberately don't use the word "quality") it is more than offest by the volume, tone and Accuracy modernized instruments have.

The dynamic and balance of the orchestra is almost completely different when you go back to gut strings, wooden woodwinds, etc. It's fascinating! My channel actually has a growing number of pieces from the classsical period being performed on period instruments. Fascinating sound!

INDEED. The "recurve" bow wasn't really standardized until about 1800 as you note. Harpsichord for continuo in Baroque and later (as here, Haydn) works was never really replaced. The Forte-Piano could substitute, but a modern piano with cast-iron frame is just too powerful an instrument. "Authentic" performances with period instruments such as natural (nonvalved) horns 'n winds are fun but I think a bit unnecessarily 'purist.'

Most people are unaware at how different performance practice in the classical era was compared to modern performance. like the baroque, vibrato was a little more occasional. Pegs for cellos were just starting to come around. Flutes were actually made of wood... Trumpets didn't have valves... etc.

I've been playing the trumpet for 8 years and she's been my inspiration all along. I saw her perform in Glasgow earlier this year and met her before hand. She's such a genuine person and is a truly talented musician. I could watch her play all day - amazing tone and articulation. She makes playing the trumpet look so easy.
