As someone who works AT shamu stadium in this Seaworld of California, I must laugh at your comment. In no way are the whales ever harmed or treated poorly. They are given great care and attention on a daily basis by the trainers and vet staff.

No. Seaworld no longer captures the whales in the wild. The current baby whales were born at Seaworld and so were a large majority of the adults. Only a few, maybe 5 of the 30 or so whales that seaworld owns in all 3 parks combined were caught in the wild, and that was back in thee 1960s. So its great how they have lasted this long.

Yes, civilians (Ted Griffin in particular) would capture orcas and aquariums would pay for them. To be fair, Sea World only has five orcas that were caught in the wild, all the others have been born there :P

the baby might have slid too far out, because he wanted to be as far forward as the two big ones. The deck should be slightly inclined towards the pool, so that it is easy to assist a whale or other animals back into the pool. You could even have like a fire hydrant that you open,and the water just washes the stranded whale back into the pool.

I agree. Iam lucky to have somewhere like that in England called 'Living Coasts' It is a coastal zoo and conservation charity run in conjunction with Paignton Zoo. It protects and breeds endangered sea life, returning some to the wild when numbers permit. It is non profit making,and has educational projects for local school children to learn and understand about the animals habitats/problems being faced. I can provide a link if people PM me.

Dolphins and whales can not be trained by force. If you push a dolphin, it pushes back. If you starve a dolphin, it dies. If you punish a dolphin, then the fun atmosphere of the session is ruined and you get nowhere. If a dolphin is not given its daily amount of nutrition, their health deteriorates, and they are more prone to illness and death. These animals are trained using a system of positive reinforcement. People twist this and make it seem like they're punished if they don't behave.

Two weeks ago we had Orcas here in our waters of Madeira. That's rar but it happens and when it happens it is wonderfull. Only in the oceans you should see this animals, they belong to the wild and it's much more interesting to see them in their natural behaviour then in this aqua parks, where they have to funktion and make themselves like clowns. Poor animals! What the hell are we humans thinking we are?

Oh my Lord. You guys have to realize that these animals were unable to be put back into the wild. They were ingured and taken to seaworld where they recived treatment for their ingury. If for some reason they were unable to go back into the wild because of a health issue they kept them and let them live a longer life then if they would have been released into the wild. Stop making such quick judgements.

There was only one Shamu, and she died in the 1960's. Now, each orca has their own individual name (Takara, Trua, Katina, etc.), but Shamu is the essential stage name.

I get goosebumps when I watch this, but not in a good way. This is the cheesiest, theatrical, dramatic show sea world has ever made. I didn't go to sea world to watch the trainers have fun with the whales and high five each other. Remember when they used to teach the audience about the animals? How long they live? The natural origins of the tricks they do? I especially love when they try to sell the wooden tail fin necklace at the end.

Yes it would be ideal if they could live in the ocean, but seaworld like zoo's does serve a purpose. These animals are ambassadors. When hundreds of thousands of children and adults see these amazing creatures they are more inclined to protect those living in the wild. They also do a lot of research on these animals which serves the great good of their species.

These whales would die in the ocean. All but the oldest one or two have been born in captivity (MMPA of '72, look it up); it would be similar to releasing a housecat into the wild, where it really "belongs." Also note how the trainers reward each behavior with fish (called positive reinforcement). If a whale didn't want to perform, it wouldn't, and Sea World doesn't use negative reinforcement, so no punishment for the whale. The shows/behaviors are an enrichment activity, like training dogs.

I never ride a roller coaster before because I had a bad experience with height when I was 6 years old. But on this summer,I went to UniversalStudios & my parents compelled me to ride The Hulk. They also compelled me to ride The Kraken when we're in SeaWorld. I have no idea why I was obeying them at that time. But after that,I realized that it's fun! I'm not regret it at all! And I'm not "glorifying" Seaworld, just saying that they have tried to teach us. Even in these little shows they tell you tidbits about the animals. This show was made to make people more aware. I saw it first hand, not just on this video. The video showed only the most interesting parts not the whole show where they talked to the audience about the animals. It was beautiful, and touching in my eyes, not cruel.

If I get proof of they mistreating their animals then maybe I'll understand your point of view, but I haven't. I just found the show enchanting rather than cruel. The animals and people seemed to understand one another which is a beautiful thing. The whales wouldn't listen to the trainers if they were being cruel, they'd attack them. They're captive but not stupid. And dolphins are naturally friendly, they seem to love attention.

These parks have only decreased the populations of orcas and dolphins by catching them, even those caught in the past still affect the populations in the wild. They exist in the wild in pods, when captures occured, not only those captured were missing but those that died during the capture. Those pods have since struggled to recover. Orcas overall are not near extinction, but the pods individually suffered.

They have a whole program for rehabilitating Manatees (not a cetacean i know) but they do rehabilitate animals such as Sea lions and oil spill victims I just know they participate in programs like WWF and such (i'm not sure exactly which) and animals born in captivity simply cannot be released simple fact, they don't pull from the ocean wild whales because they're dangerous just ones bought from other zoos or wild life parks.

Well, I still would like to know of cases where Sea World was involved in or responsible for rehabilitating any animals. They have been known to want no part in taking in any cetacean whom was injured and therefore could not be exploited for profit. There was no typo you misread it, when i meant release the animals in captivity i meant the animals in captivity were being released maybe i should have added another word to make it clearer, but it proves that I'm human and make mistakes, apparently so do you if you misread it. You have a point with captivity. I don't support captivity for animal experimentation, but this isn't sad at all. The trainers and the Orca have a bond together, and at Sea World they're given the best care and never have food taken away. As for shows, how many people can force an 8000 pound animal with big teeth to do tricks for no food? Not many. It would attack them if it really hated what it was doing. Keiko is my hero! i 1st saw him when i was 4. i even have the same 3 marks on my left wrist that he had on his throat. they shouldnt let him go cause being in captivity messed up his survival skills.

I see everyone talking about keiko, because he was in a movie. ATLEAST he had the chance to die in the wild a free animal, Poor Kandu bleed to death in an aquarium performing as trianed, after its jaw was broken, Did the people of seaworld comfort this animal as it bleed to death. NO they mopped the blood up from the edges of the pool, to help control its image. RIP KANDU

i dont think orcas should go back 2 the wild i know out in the wild is their home but its good 2 keep them in a tank for awhile and train them 2 do good stuff cuz if they r out in the wild stupid fishermen is killing them and u see them get wash up on shore and getting into fights with sharks and sealion. keiko was not breed in captivity he was capatured in iceland,age of 2 alot of scientist/professtional whale handlers tried 2 prevernt his release coz they said he owuldnt surive after being too use to human contact also it was well know he had a weak immunse system n that he had a high risk of dying in the wild but coz ppl refused to listen when discussing about keeping him in captivity he died the ppl that loved him so much killed him its sad to know they had the right intenstion at heart

Orcas or dolphins are not forced to perform if you watch them in the wild most of the tricks you see are natural hunting techniques i have been fortunate to see killer whales in the wild i have seen them do most of the tricks that they perform some killer whales are caught because they are sick so they catch them and treat them but some times they are to dependent of the dsily feeds and humans that they can not be released back in to the wild due to this they use them in shows.

I fully agree with Flargmuffin92... when Orcas have been captive for so long there is no hope in releasing them. the only hope that you can have for them is that they spend their remaining years as comfortable as they can be. Looking at Keiko... he was released back into the wild but spent his last years looking to people as his companions not other killer whales... when you keep an animal, no matter the species, in captivity you can't expect it's reintroduction to the wild to be an easy one.

this is awesome! I haven't been to Sea World in 15 years, and when I went 15 years ago, and they had that video showing baby killer whales being born, what they did differently was, they just showed a montage that started out as all these different births taking place, and then the milestones they went through, with beginning to eat fish, and during the montage, I think they played the song, "Baby Baby", by Amy Grant.

It's Nalani on the video, her mother Katina have a lot of calves.Katina became the first "successful" mother in captivity with her calf Kalina. Kalina have a lot of calves too. It's not natural to born in captivity but it's a good signal because it's a sign that Orcas are so "comfortable" there that they are reproducing. A lot of orcas are artificially insaminated too, most of times using Tillikum's semen. He is actually the father of almost all calves born at all SeaWorld parks!

How nice that you have an OPINION on the matter. Unfortunately, its wrong. As my comment before already stated, very few orca at Sea World today have EVER seen the open ocean. Even for those few, they've made family pods at their locations. Should we retrain them, forcibly remove them from their families, and stick them in open water in the hopes they find a new family unit? These few wild-caught orca are not a "few years" out of the ocean, they are DECADES out.

this may sound corny but is the one that jumped the trainer the whale that played willy? It's fin is curved like the female that played willy's was, hmmmm oh, and even though they are in small tanks, which is not so good I believe seaworld takes the best care of their orca's that they can, the orca's have a real connection with them. it's pretty incredible
