No, this was common back in the day, as a way to show patriotism. Remember, sign-ons usually had the national anthem (Star Spangled Banner). Sign-offs didn't have that requirement, but most stations did something similar to this.

Hey that's my uncle Henry! What a wonderful man he was. He was always there for family. My mother(his sister) would always have him over for Holiday dinners. He was always so good to her. I can't say enough about this man. His dedication to the Dabecco family was genuine and endless. Sadly we lost Uncle Henry in 2005. We will remember him forever. JJ :)

This IS my Uncle, Henry Dabecco. My uncle was an inspiration and a patriarch of our entire famigilia. He guided me after the death of my father(his brother) and helped me during my aspiring years as an entertainer. I will forever be indebted to my uncle for his love and support for my mother. "Uncle Henry" was loved and will be missed by many. He remains dear to our hearts forever.

It does sound like newscaster Paul Long,but Henry DaBecco handled sign off on channel 4 Wednesday through Sunday until his retirement in 1987.I used to listen to his show on KQV in the 1960's. DaBecco passed away in 2005.

This is too cool! I lived in Pgh 1980-85 while an undergrad at Pitt. I always liked the morph of the Golden Triangle into the WTAE logo. And the strings and the tempo of the music always sounded "urgent"... like the city itself always seemed. I listened to WTAE-AM in the mornings with O'Brien and Garry too... great way to start the day. I remember how cold it was that Christmas too. Thanks for the great flashback!

Yeah, there was one from around 1971 or '72 that had Don and Paul riding horseback through the wild country and there were these scruffy characters on the bluff looking at them and saying, "Who ARE those guys?" I think this scene was borrowed from the movie "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid." It was great!

Another memory from that time, I was 17 and had my own car. My neighbor needed his van jumpstarted so I went over, mom joined me, She noticed his van's battery cable was bare, he sort of blew her off. We jumped it OK, but a few weeks later, again frigid temps, his van caught fire. I had a 1977 Pontiac Grand Prix, the battery was original, but even at 20 below, it fired right up.

I remember that Christmas, temperatures were like almost 20 below. I had my driver's license for 2 months and I remember doing donuts in the snow. B-) I was over at my father's place Christmas Eve where my step brother and I ran out into the frigid cold to witness a fire closeby, needless to say, we didn't stay out too long. Thanks for the memories.
