That's pretty much how the Oceania (or at least London) of 1984 was envisioned in the 1955 movie starring Edmond O'Brien. Everything was sterile, white, antiseptic. The art direction in the newer film was intended to be as Orwell himself might have imagined it, complete with the dilapidated apartments, shoddy consumer goods and late-1940s technology (round TV screens, dial phones, pneumatic tubes, etc.).

That is rubbish. You don't get tortured and shot for denying global warming. And, by and large, the main players opposing the warming idea are politicians, rich corporations and land-owners. The scientists, who have no real power, are on the other side. The US grassroots opposition are ALL self-identifying right-wingers who reflexively oppose everything seen as "liberal" concepts. They oppose by default. It is a fascinating thing that Orwell has the power to be all things to all people.

Not sure what all the fuss is about. I'd like to live in Airstrip One. Free alarm call + exercise. Gin for breakfast. Free food. Watch lots of telly. Also, you don't have to use so many words to say stuff. Saves time and bother. OK, there's a couple of down sides to any dictatorship, but overall, Winston's got it pretty sweet if you ask me!

I do not agree with, "As a man thinketh, so is he." It is true that you cannot act without some form of thought; but no where near all the thoughts thought are acted upon. USA laws were ONLY intended to PUNISH actions prohibited by law. The Constitution, Amendment 4 protects thoughts both imagined and written, as that which is written MUST first be thought. This makes most of the "patriot act" Unconstitutional, in that even the discovered plans to do wrong are not wrong until acted upon.

lem is true; "1984" has been with us essentially forever. In my own little case, if I could be Big Brother, I would round up all the vivisector and furrier types and deport them to Atlantis. There would be no point in trying to re-educate them. Look at North Korea! So 1984 is an extreme example of what can happen but it shows how bad ideologies are. Some things in the west are censored so are Orwellian. America supporting dictatorships that aren't told to us. Most people in the world are in poverty and aid goes to the war lords - they are the proletariat and the west is the inner party. So what your saying George, is that it's the govenment and the corporations that are the force? I don't think the relationship is as tight as you think ... yet The banks are just as bad. It is hard to draw a clear dividing line between corporations and government - they are in a symbiotic coexistence. See how many politicians have a background, concerning some corporation, and how many corporative interess is concentrated in the political decisions, taken by the "servants of the nation".

I was responding to a comment about how this wouldnt happen in a democratic country. My comment was not about anti-democratic dictators ( How many dictators have actually been democratically elected and then given totalitarian powers by their parliments?) it was about how the law can be subverted for any political ends. And it actually doesn't have to be government that runs itself like 1984, corporations have already started acting that way, with surveilliance of their workforces.
