Hitting a child with any object on anything els but buttlocks is abuse, in other words not really spanking anymore. As injury is very much possible. That's what I think. I was really surprised this boy obviously absolutely loved his dad nevertheless. Loved the moment he'd hold on to him while telling the townpeople so and the look the even at the moment drunken father gave to the other grown ups after that. But this episodes show well how even abuse cases aren't necessarely so black-and-white.

I'm pretty sure that if you beat a child enough, they get someone to do something. But generally, the law didn't want to come between a child and a parent. Same is said for US law system. You have to fight tooth and nail to get a child out of an abusive home unless you have very strong evidence to back up a claim of abuse.

Such laws didn't exist back then. Back then it was believed that whatever happened in the family stayed in the family. That it was the parent's business to discipline their child the way they see fit.

me neither.my dad is abusive as well.when i was younger my dad used to whip me with a belt real hard.but he didnt whip me in the bottom,he would whip me anywhere he could get his hands on me!when i was 10 he beat me so hard i had a huge bump on my head!and the worst thing is that he doesnt give a shit and he thinks he is a good dad when he is the biggest peice of shit in the world!i hate him so much!
