Ha- love old cycling pics and videos. what a beautiful history! This vid was actually used to demonstrate using biking for positive social change. Check it out at Youth Noise Play City.

Changing the subject slightly, the girl at 3:16 is absolutely spiffing. Ding dong!!!
By: jacknthur. on 28 Jun 08, 17:12:46
Scottishdan, I think it's quite unfair of you to lay the blame for this demonstrably inexcusable error at the foot of the cycling folk, they are merely the subjects of the film. Surely responsibility must rest with the film maker, in this case, British Transport Films.
By: scottishdan. on 28 Jun 08, 15:08:03
And what's more, the error is repeated in the actual video - right at the beginning. There is no questioning the enthusiasm of these middle England, pipe-smoking, beer-quaffing, archaeology-discussing gentle cycling folk, but all credibility is lost by this most embarrassing grammatical faux pas. I'm ashamed to be British.
By: jacknthur. on 28 Jun 08, 13:25:20
Quite right, Scottishdan. I've taken thirty lashes and corrected the error.

I thought 50's Britain could punctuate; I would say that in the title, "Cyclists" should have an apostrophe after the S as it is a plural possessive. I'm black affronted. What what, jolly hockey sticks etc etc

Rugby? It's no friggin' countryside now, just a crappy industrial town... Oh how times have changed. There was no global warming then. Summers were sunny, Winters were wintry and now we get anything anytime. Ditch your car!!! Better still, crash your car into a few others to get rid of a few at the same time! Check it out, white mudguards, can't get them now though - all silver or black damnit!!

Great video. I remember when you could do this. Now you need to have a folding bike to be sure of getting on a train. Oh for the old days. Why can't the rain companies see the benefit of making room for bikes?

This video is awesome!!! Bicycles and trains make a great combination. I took my bicycle on Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railway for $2. Sometimes I also take my bicycle on the rapid or bus to get downtown. Some day I hope bicycles have more value as real transport instead of being lumped under the catagory of sporting goods.

this is possibly the best cycling video posted to YouTube. Thank You

the only places in the uk as car-free as this is are in the highlands of scotland...between wick and tongue i was passed by about a dozen cars in a day......let's hope the oil runs out soon and we can get rid of a few million cars.

If you go to Rugby, Warwickshire, UK where the cyclists departed from, the roads and villages are pretty much the same today... There is very rural countryside in all directions.

Man, me and my dad were just talking about that. He is Lebanese and I have gone there many times, he also used to live in many parts of Europe (france, switzlerland, vienna) and I have been to those countries also. You are right, there is no longevity. In europe you have 500 year old buildings, in Lebanon you have thousands of year old roman pillars. Here you have walmarts that are built to last a few decades. It's a pity.

The days when there were carriages dedicated to cycles. Now there is simply a tiny space in one of the carriages. Fully packed it holds 10 bikes and completly blocks the way down the train and it is immpossible to get bikes out!!

One might find a gas station with a convenience mart which might have pre-packaged sandwiches and a microwave. A hot meal served on a real plate and beer in a glass sitting outside at a table? Never! And...one certainly would never be able to find like minded "Gentleman/Gentlewoman" cyclists that are of like mind. Nope, no Lake Pepin Three Speed Tours here.

I live in a rural area of KY and we simply lack the village atmosphere as seen in these videos. Nothing is built for longevity or with any sense of aesthetic pleasure. There are no roadside inns or pubs. There are no stone or split rail fences.

Actually, here in the US there's a few places where you can cycle tour in the same style. I live just outside of Ashland, VA (north of Richmond) and some Sunday mornings I'll forbear my double butted steel road bikes for my '71 Raleigh Sports, wool plus fours (aka, knickers to the Americans)and pedal through the town and countryside in the same manner.

I love those classic bicycles as well. No carbon-boron frames with plastic derailleurs. No marketing ploy gizmosity. Just clean, classical and subdued. Note that the riders do not need to dress like some sort of riding billboard or in the latest magenta lycra. Nowadays, everything is about identifying oneself as a "cyclist" and with brandname.

Oh, that one could find nice country roads sans the blare of thrashing radios, petrol exhaust, and constant streams of automobiles. Here in the States, we also lack the sites of historical interest and the small village bistros where one can stop for a spot of lunch. Now, all one sees is mobile homes, metal pole barns, raw concrete abutment bridges, white vinyl fencing.
