Letterman and Schafer were fans somewhat of Zappa. Letterman often had Hunter S. Thompson on those days as well. The show was going for the late night stoner crowd. As Conan's people do today.

I understand why he wanted to add new elements to the deteriorated albums (listen to, I think, "Mom and Dad" on the unremixed 'Money' CD to hear just how awful they sounded); but he didn't actually make them sound legit. Everything sounds so cheesy and Eighties-ish. Which is, I guess, why people hated them...

They were just a band... so what they performed other people songs, they didn't originally give credit but did after the fact it was made into a big deal. I really don't care where The songs came from. I haven't studied Zeppelin History that much.
