to musicvideo45 - thx.for info - the same happened a few years ago in Italy, when a bunch of rock and ice fell into a mountain lake. The result was a fatal minitsunami:some tourists watching and filming that heavenly place were thrown away. That's pure fatality and misfortune.

a big chunk of rock fell of a mountaian and hit the water(the rumbleing noise was the big rock giving away the atomic explosion was the rock hitting the water)

not caused by a glacier either piece of the mountain broke off or i know there is a plate boundery really close to alaska so couldve been caused by a convergent boundery one plate was being subducted and the friction of the plate being pushed under pushes the other plate down and it springs back up that is what caused the indonesia tsunami

That the wave was almost 500 meters (1720 ft) high is just ridiculous. It is claimed the wave removed vegetation and trees as high up as 1720 feet up, but that doesn't mean the actual WAVE was as high as that. It just means the splash when it hit land reached as high as that.

Yes, I thought about it after I wrote it. I have had a lot of tension on my anchor chain... a lot... but as you say it was typically gradual.
