the thing is, that macs are different, ipods are different (or used to be), and people like them. you might call macs shit, and ipods portable crap, but people still like them, and there are around 30 million macs and over a 100 million iPods out there, and people like them, they use them, and (most) of them don't think they are shit (some do, but most don't). Just as I say that Windows is a piece of shit, some people like it, and it has a 90% market share.

It's not even a copy of the iPhone, because it isnt comparable. The iPhone is a mobile software platform with an awesome multitouch Interface, while the Prada simply is just a "regular" cell phone with a regular, old-tech touch screen with some added gimmicks. The original iPhone wasn't so mart. No 3G, for a year there weren't down loadable apps, and it was nearly impossible to type emails on that screen in vertical mode which was, and still is, the only way apple lets you do it. The 3G is much better though.

I've tried both OpenSUSE and Ubuntu, and I'll keep trying new versions of these distros cause I'd like to know when these things improve. I've till this day always had to apt-get the nVidia-config panel and open that in su-mode from console to change anything to my likening. Granted that didn't require manually editing xorg.conf, but I happen to have 4 monitors on 2 GPU's and a tablet and that surely is too much for a userfriendly settings interface on Linux.

Good thing that NeXTStep made OS X so much better. It's all there. And more. Still, a lot of people seem to think that Macs are not a good deal. The PC manufacturers taught people over years to buy computers over hardware feature lists, since there was no difference in the software anyway. You get a Mac because of software, not because it is stock hardware wrapped into a stock case for the lowest possible price.

As long as Linux geeks still believe it is normal to expect your end-user to sudo kate xorg.conf to setup a second monitor PROPERLY, Linux won't make a chance on the desktop market. I'd like it to be that way too, but its simply not the case. On my Mac I can plug in any monitor while its already on, press detect and drag the squares to arrange it to my likening. A 3 y/o could do it. So fair enough, yes, a 3 y/o is dumber than you, well, have fun feeling elite.

Actually he was right, too right in this case. He correctly said that the PC market would move into the professional space, this indeed occurred. The problem is that NeXT could never hit the price targets that would get them the 50% that they were looking for. If they misread anything, it was the price sensitivity of the market (my guess is that they didn't misread it, they were getting a bit desperate). NeXT's biggest problem is that they showed up too late with tech that was too early.

We're not talking about high-end PCs here. These are 5,000$-10,000$ computer workstations. Moore's law made sure the gap was closing up fast enough that the migration went towards more powerful, but still cheaper, PCs. There was no expansion, no new market to conquer. Theirs was drying up. In the end, they could only ship 50,000 of them. Steve was wrong. NeXt withdrew from the hardware business in 1993 and renamed themselves NeXT Software Inc.

Remember, this is spring 1990, when the choices were Macintosh System 6, windows 3.0, SunOS 4 (BSD-based, not System V, pre-Solaris) plus OpenLook, Motif 1.0, NeWS, or X-Windows. Only Steve Jobs miscalculated the migration from personal computers, or at best, was years ahead of his time. Windows NT and Solaris eventually won in the years immediately following.

What immediately hits me as I'm watching this, is that it's the first time I see Steve Jobs being so absolutely wrong about something, and arguing with the usual passion and conviction. Was NeXT so hungry that they misinterpreted the data in their favor, to desperately target a seemingly substantial market? Whatever it is, I can't help but be sympathetic to those guys - their workstation was years beyond their competitors and the programming frameworks were a small slice of heaven, for the 90's.

Form over function... they really weren't the greatest computers. Brand new they were fine, but upgrading or repairing these things is a pain, and they still are today. Dano, you shouldn't have to observe, but I guess you need to. You are missing the nuance and insight in a big way. Where were you sitting on that day.... maybe we crossed paths. I was at the previous 3 and this was the best. It amazes me how so many people fail to look under the surface. How do you know why "Bill freezes"? did he confide in you?. No. I was there that day! She needs to take her hand off her face ... Walt can't talk down his co-host even if he is right too. Kara and Walt mumble way too, walt "um's" and "ah's" every 5 words. this is the biggest problem. it's a live interview not there backyard BBQ. The reason Bill freezes is because of the ridiculous way they are spoken too, we can both agree Steve is a confident man yet he had to pause as well. i shouldn't have to "observe" as hard as you did to gain any insight from this.

The hardware is commodity today.... any one any where can build the hardware... see China junk .... the success if the SOFTWARE in a BEAUTIFUL BOX. Simple. Yo Dano, I respectfully disagree. Take some time to look past your first Quick-impression, and study the body language, ( Steve figets and Bill freezes ) and observe the response to insightful questions, and several layers of reality surface. Hard to explain this dynamic with 500 words or less, but I would suggest, when you have nothing better to do, you watch this several times more, with focus on subliminal dynamics. Reference TIME, PLACE, MARKET, and PRODUCT, ... and the beauty will appear.

Worst interviewers ever ever! the woman is not needed "hehehe i like PC guy" i mean she is talking rubbish, the guy um's and ah's WAY TOO MUCH, and is asking stupid obvious questions about competing, bill and steve try to so hard to save the interview with relevant comments but interviewers still can't follow up.

Ok, scratch that, just looked at some more answers by other people about a month ago: -- WARP10CK Its was a french voice saying you have mail. PSMNP Yeah, I think whoever recorded this was recording the audio and video off of their Mac because I think you can hear the volume button feedback tone at around 2:42. -- Conclusion: A French person (probably the poster of this video, who is French) recorded this from his Mac and we get to hear some sounds of stuff going on in the background. :)
