Well, I've never been a big fan of resource-intensive user interfaces. While I think XP's Luna interface looks nice, I've tended to disable it to save a little memory and speed. And although Vista's UI looks nice, I'm sure I would do the same thing with Vista. For me, that's just not a "gotta have it" feature.
By: Imprezaman555. on 05 Nov 08, 11:51:22
that is very true, better has a completely different def. for diff. ppl with diff needs. however, vista does have alot of extra stuff, mainly in the usr interface. you may not notice because you a)don't have a computer that is pwrful enough to take advantage of these effects or b)havn't compaired them side by side i have compaired them side by side on a computer that can handle both with xp running inside vitual machine on vista and vista's ui is considerably smoother. i cant really explain it.
By: jadetraveler. on 05 Nov 08, 02:38:57
The definition of "better" may differ between people. I used Windows Vista briefly, and what I saw was very little significant new features over XP, yet it requires more RAM & hard drive space and a faster CPU and video card. That's not what I would call "better". Vista has a pretty new user interface, which doesn't much matter to me; it also has behind-the-scenes changes that I wonder were really necessary. And your computer can't be much more powerful if the OS uses much of that power.
By: Imprezaman555. on 04 Nov 08, 20:07:22
why not? computers always need to keep getting better and more powerfull. that is how progress is made.
By: jadetraveler. on 04 Nov 08, 02:51:47
I don't think we should have to get used to increasing hardware requirements as much as we've had to do with Windows. If Microsoft hadn't pushed the envelope as much and kept Windows relatively lightweight, imagine how fast and smoothly it would run on today's computers.
By: Imprezaman555. on 04 Nov 08, 02:04:57
yeah, by the time vista came out a complete remodeling of or making a new OS would be necessary. if they had done it over time computer co. and users would get used to the increased demand on hardware and differences in the ui. also, for what they do xp seems more efficiant in terms of hardware requirements for smooth operation and what they do using that hardware.
By: jadetraveler. on 04 Nov 08, 01:58:08
I think you are right. The fact that we got along just fine with XP proves, to me, that we don't need a new bloated version of Windows (i.e., Vista). So Microsoft could have done well by releasing smaller improvements to XP rather than a new bloated version of Windows.
By: jadetraveler. on 04 Nov 08, 01:55:46
Okay. You didn't explain what you meant when you said XP was a milestone, so I was going off a different assumption. I didn't know that PC sales skyrocketed when XP came out. But I still don't agree with you. It's not like Windows XP was the first version of Windows. Windows 95 was arguably the first version of Windows that was supposed to truly bring Windows to the masses in terms of ease of use, and it came out 7 years before XP. So I don't think XP was any milestone there.
By: Imprezaman555. on 04 Nov 08, 01:53:17
also, the only reason that osx is still around is that bill gates never made a major upgrade for xp like smoother graphics and other things like that to get ppl ready for whats comin up in vista. that means that many ppl too impatiant or just listen to ppl like that just cant seem to want to learn how to use it or dont want to spend $20 on a ram upgrade or upgrading an outdated pc. the fact that steve jobbs is persistant payed off because he waited long enough for ppl and ms to make a mistake.
By: Imprezaman555. on 04 Nov 08, 01:43:25
okay, you were doin well until you said it wasnt a mile stone. when xp came out and the years after not only did the ratio of windows users for mac users sky rocket but the overall number of computer users did the same, almost all of them xp users. this is the main reason why it was a mile stone in personal computers. pcs are all about bringing computers to average people and i dont think ppl. apreciate how much they owe to xp for that. even mac users.

I love Unix systems, so I am using Linux at the moment. The reason that I have considered switching to Mac is the best you can because you have a solid Unix system with a friendly interface and include security for a major company like Apple. And the most important for me (developer), is that I can use propiertary and software from Microsoft or use open source GNU software like QT, GTK, Python, and so on.
By: jadetraveler. on 03 Nov 08, 05:38:35
I think they had stopped using the G3 by then, but I may be wrong. Did OS 9 run on the G4?
By: jadetraveler. on 03 Nov 08, 05:31:19
It was an interesting move going from a proprietary kernel to a UNIX-based system. That's one reason I've considered switching to Mac next time I upgrade rather than building/buying a new PC.
By: jadetraveler. on 03 Nov 08, 05:18:54
XP was a milestone in that it was the first consumer-level Windows to combine Windows NT security/stability with features from the 9x line. But other than that, I don't think it was a milestone in usability. It was just another iteration of Windows. And I don't think it doomed OS X at all. OS X has been improving steadily since it came out.
By: Imprezaman555. on 03 Nov 08, 04:38:38
it was a great OS but was doomed when xp came out. xp will always be known as the great milestone in personal computer history along with the invention of the gui from xerox. because they made computer somthing for every1.
